A warning has been issued by The British Safety Council as research has revealed that employees are far more likely to suffer injuries in the first few months than at any other time, and with the holiday season upon us, employers are urged to pay extra attention to the health and safety especially of temporary summer workers, including the approach to high visibilty safety workwear.

The risk of injury can be vastly reduced by taking simple common sense steps. They are many reasons for someone being more vulnerable when starting a new job. They may have a general lack of work experience, a general unfamiliarity with the workplace, its machinery or specific work processes, a lack of physical capability to complete a task or the confidence to raise concerns faced, or it maybe a failure of the employers to provide the necessary training, equipment and familiarisation.

One of the key issues to be faced is that of leadership, as organisations and individuals need to ensure that safe working practices are in place and that they are followed by promoting a work environment that promotes safe behaviour. Obviously planning and risk assessment have to be done, then utilising the knowledge of existing staff decide how best to control the risk of each task and then provide the appropriate training to any new employee, and to check that anyone receiving the training has understood what they have been taught.

The Council has been working within schools to make pupils more aware of the hazards that can be faced in a working environment, its ‘Speak Up, Stay Safe’ campaign highlights some of the particular risks and puts good communication as the main basis of health and safety in the workplace. It has set up a dedicated website with all the information people could need in a bid to reduce the injury rate
