The unstylish short sleeve shirt! Who said that?
In a world where onesies can be seen as stylish once a celeb or two is seen in them, the short sleeved buttoned-up shirt can be seen as, to say the least, controversial. Polo shirts are fine, and long sleeved shirts are seen as smart and businesslike, but its short sleeved cousin is frowned on. Every year the question arises, Can I wear this shirt in the office and still look the part?’
Unfortunately the conclusion tends to be that it is only for the brave or the new office boy on work experience. The situation isn’t helped by the way that both the small and big screen portrays characters who wear this garment, especially if worn with a tie. Look at TV and we see the likes of Homer Simpson and Moss from The IT Crowd pushing non too successful images, and then on the big screen we have the likes Michael Douglas in Falling Down portraying armed psychopaths.
It is simply wrong because this time of shirt is comfortable to wear, and look's smarter than having to roll up your sleeves, and is smarter for the office than wearing a polo shirt. However, we do see fashion styled short sleeved shirts a plenty and these seem to be acceptable on social occasions.
Why not let me have your thoughts on why it doesn’t seem right to wear this in the office. Or maybe you have had positive experiences lets hear about them. Maybe I’m too much of a Moss, so that if it feels comfortable wearing this in the office and it fits a company’s dress code brazen it out, it is considered so out of style that they could be seen as something radical, but the best reason is that they are comfortable. Although maybe this summer I should consider getting rid of the tie? What am I thinking!
